  • animator? nah sorry, i dont mean to be rude and arrogant, im good at writing story, screenplay, even im good at composing music, designing game and directed a scene. im having some kind of mental illness and people always disrespect me, even if i find a job at game industry, they always dump me, and the worst part they get my idea for free. im not being arrogant here, i just really pissed off and dissapointed to those people, i like game and making game and so they are, as a people who share a same interest they sure really disapoint me. if i learn to be animator now, and work in some game industry they will ridicule me even more. they will say im doing nothing, now tell me how the hell writing hundreths even thousands pharagraph of storyline, script and sceenplay is considered nothing? thats my work, i writing thousands of pharagraph of storyline, script, and screenplay and also i DESIGN the fucking game, and COMPOSING the music, thats a HUGE 3 important stuff in a game and i put a HUGE effort working on it, and of course its the BACKBONE and the FOUNDATION that the other people in studio work on, they work on top of MY hardwork. and they still say i done nothing.

I guess I should learn how to bounce a ball by hand before using a physics engine to speed up the animation. Also whats the difference between a CGI film studio & a game company, you said you got hired at Pixar Canada for your first job, can you go into more detail? I think you need a part 2 to this video.

  • Bonus Tip #1: There are many more animation/artist jobs than just games and movies. Consider using those as stepping stones or as a way to make money until you land your dream job. I’m currently a 3D artist for a medical marketing company. It’s not video games and I have no medical background but it’s a great company and I’m learning a ton of skills every day from a wide variety of disciplines that I can apply to a future video game job. Bonus Tip #2: Learn all you can outside of animation. The best creativity comes when you have more knowledge to draw from. Pun intended. You never know when something from history, science, cooking etc. might inspire a game idea. Consider getting a full bachelor’s degree instead of just an animation school. I went to a cheap university that had an ok animation program but I also took generals. I really value the additional knowledge I received. Bonus Tip #3: Don’t place so much emphasis on your program. Just as tools don’t make you a great artist, ultimately it’s you and not the art program that will make you great. Art programs are great for giving you a spring board of knowledge but if you’re not taking the initiative and teaching yourself as well you’re gonna have a harder time excelling. Without exaggeration I would say over half of what I knew by the time I graduated I learned on my own. My professor’s tried to give me a simple concept to learn a skill but I was never satisfied with the assignment so I googled how to create the rig I needed in order to create the animation I envisioned which was way above the criteria for the assignment. I didn’t always finished because I was too ambitious but I learned more than I would if I just did the minimum. In the end it’s not about grades. It’s about your demo reel. Bonus Tip #4: Google, google, google. You can’t keep up with a rapidly changing industry and you will frequently encounter things you don’t know how to do. While I do ask my fellow artist’s for suggestions, I google stuff every single day at work because I’ve either forgotten or don’t know how to do something. Of my classmates that dropped out of the program, they all had one thing in common. They didn’t know how to teach themselves.
