Hitler's Biggest Mistake Of The War | Warlords: Hitler vs Stalin | Timeline

The personalities and spectres of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin loom large in the events of the twentieth Century. They were similar in some respects and yet very different in others.
The first in a series that examines the interaction of the leading protagonists of WW2, this program looks in some depth at the nature of the relationship and interaction of these two ‘warlords’. The use of primary materials and memoirs as sources gives the psycho-historical analysis some substance.

  • He could have fortified and simply braced for the Soviet wave to wash over Poland and crash into Berlin... Kept Germany peaceful, and avoid trouble with the nations toward the west, and avoided war with USA and UK. When he went on the offensive it more rapidly drained resources, and cost so many lives. If he had avoided the creation of concentration camps and simply deported people to Israel, maybe even funded the start up of Israel, that would have changed history: The lance corporal would have been a strong defensive leader, and good supporter of Israel, instead of a destroyer of so much and so many lives. IF... IF they could have been good, and avoided the evil of World War 2 completely, that could have gone better. World Wars makes everyone losers... :-( Like the first time a child is told of World War 2, a boy raises his hand, and asks, "What other planet was Earth fighting against ?"

  • All i watch now is Holocaust documentaries and survivor stories. I can’t fathom how little was actually taught to me in school compared to what i learned outside of school. My great grandma was a survivor herself and never spoke about her experience to anyone but her daughter (my aunt) and at her funeral in December my aunt finally told her story. I was in tears. If it wasn’t for my great grandma finding a way to get a passport to the US, none of my family would be here or she would have never had descendants. I’m utterly grateful for what she did. I now know why she wasn’t able to talk about it all those years. May she finally rest and never have to think about it again. Even though i miss her dearly. When she immigrated here she dropped her last name and converted to Christianity and I’m now trying to learn about my ancestor culture and want to practice.

One suggested to strike from leningrad and take helsinki so finland would capitulate, and the other proposed to attack on the whole border. Stalin accepted the second pland and it was a massacre...

    Alex GamingAlex Gaming7 dögum síðan
    • @Your Average Scotsman yes

      Alex GamingAlex Gaming6 dögum síðan
    • Correct. The second plan was more akin to how the Germans took over Poland. Unfortunately, Poland has a lot of roads and infrastructure which Tanks can rely on and push forward. Finland, on the other hand, was snow, trees and, maybe, a few dirt roads. Due to how few they were, the Finns could just wait until Soviet Tanks got far down the roads, ambush the Colum and kill the Soviets.

    • China is poking, and playing a superpower game of chess with the US, Australia, Japan, and South Korea. They aren't crazy and wouldn't risk the deaths of millions of Chinese in Taiwan and on Mainland China by starting an unwinnable war to reclaim Taiwan. It's better to use Cold War confrontations between US-Soviet, Sino-Soviet, and Sino-American militaries. Any military conflict involving the US and Russia is handled completely different than conventional warfare used during WW2. There's already proxy conflict, intelligence, and economic warfare. That will be the extent because if the whole world tried to fight the US, Nato and the US would win in 60 days.

  • Hitler's biggest mistake was starting any war 2 or 3 years too early. If he had waited then he would have had a bigger Air Corp, more tanks, more men, and enough time to make winter clothes to make war in Russia.

    BEN CALVERTBEN CALVERT7 dögum síðan
    • @Your Average Scotsman Germany had the best army in Europe. Two things kept them from winning the war. Hitler's incompetence and not having the materials needed to fight in Russia. They used horses and not trucks. They had no proper winter clothing for the majority of the soldiers. Britain did not start their rebuilding until Poland was attacked. If Germany had waited 2 years to invade Poland then They would have outmatched anything Germany or Russia could have done because they started too late.

      BEN CALVERTBEN CALVERT6 dögum síðan
    • @BEN CALVERT The UK and France actually WERE beginning to rearm. Ever heard of the Shadow Scheme? It bore fruit when the war broke out and helped Britain produce far more war materials, such as Planes, when the war started. The USSR was reorganising and modernising after the purges and would have been ready by 1941-42. The Germans would never push them back as far as they did if they didn't attack in 1941, when the Red Army was incredibly disorganised and not ready for a defensive war.

Your Average ScotsmanYour Average Scotsman6 dögum síðan
    • @Your Average Scotsman But that is an assumption that has nothing to back it up. Germany had been building up for 6 or 7 years and neither Britain, France or Russia had done anything. All 3 would have been behind. If Germany had 50 to 100 more subs they could have cut off all supplies to Britain. Neither England nor France wanted war. They waited until Germany made the move to invade Poland. No invasion no build-up by them. It is just a theory on my part. You may well be correct.

      BEN CALVERTBEN CALVERT6 dögum síðan
    • But that's also 3 years that the UK, France and USSR could use to prepare, which they already were doing. Had he waited 3 years then the French would have modernised their Army, the UK would have heavily expanded the RAF and its Navy with the new Lion-Class Battleships and newer Carriers and the USSR would have been modernised as well. Waiting only makes the Germans lose faster.
