  • I wouldn't say the country is exclusively called America. I'm Canadian and we generally refer to the country as the US, USA, United States, or simply "the States", though we do call the people "Americans". If you simply say "America" to me I'll probably figure you are talking about the country specifically but might not be sure without clear context.

  • If the Continent was named "America" after Americo Vespucci and the FIRST MAPS call the whole CONTINENT of AMERICA this means that A SINGLE COUNTRY (US) APPROPRIATEs and calls itself "AMERICA" is a LYING VERSION (UScentric version) OF REALITY. United States implies that it is a FEDERATION, "OF" implies that it belongs to a place, that place at the time was the CONTINENT that was always called AMERICA as it was shown on the Waldseemuller's map. That is, UNITED STATES OF THE CONTINENT AMERICA. I see all this as a RACIST and XENOPHOBIC view of a WHITE ANGLO-SAXON COUNTRY DESCENDING FROM THE BRITISH EMPIRE on a continent (America) predominantly colonized by eastern European countries (Spain and Portugal). "WE ARE THE ORIGINAL AMERICA and the rest is "xAmérica, yAmérica" since they are descendants of Spain and Portugal". Even the term "Latin America" is a term that is also racist and xenophobic since it homogenizes 20 different countries as "ONE THING" aka "a different America". This wrong homogeinization can be seen in 4:48 because they say that Latin America is a Spanish-speaking world but the reality is that we have countries that also speak Portuguese, French...

    • América definitely is NOT a country and furthermore "American" is NOT a nationality or citizenship. I was born in the United States of América and anyone born or becomes a "natural" resident here, OFFICIALLY, are U.S. CITIZENS. North América & South América are collectively known as AMÉRICA, the American Continent(s). Anyone born on AMÉRICA is an American, even Canadians, jajaja. América means America & America means América in ANY language especially English here in AMÉRICA. Nothing gets lost in translation. Very simple

    • Latin America is called this because "all countries speak languages derived from Latin" hmmm but the official language of Suriname is German and Jamaica, Barbados speak English, where is the coherence?? If we divide the AMERICAN CONTINENT BY INFLUENCE OF THE COUNTRIES THAT COLONIZED THEM why is ANGLO-SAXONIC AMERICA not a thing like LATIN AMERICA? The term ANGLO AMERICAN is not even used because you guys think you are the real America!!!! Another problematic concept is the "West" which is also racist and xenophobic.. . You always try to GET AWAY from the other poor and predominantly NON-WHITE countries of THE CONTINENT AMERICA bc you don't want to be in the same boat as us, but guess what? THERE IS NO OCEAN BETWEEN US!!

I was once in Iceland soaking in a small natural hot spring. A lady approached me and asked me where I was from. I replied: Im from Pennsylvania in the US. She looked slightly disappointed and then said: I’m glad you didn’t say America because I’m from Ecuador and I’m and American too! I replied hello fellow American! I think most people from the US say they are from US or they mention their state. Only British people say America. We don’t generally use America or American. Unless we drop the “a” and simply say ‘Merica, which is promptly followed by “f-ck yea!

  • One thing I’d like to point out is that, after the “American” Revolution, people did want to change the name. It turns out “The United States of America” doesn’t roll off the tongue too easily. There were a couple options: - Columbia - Fredonia - No Change Nobody really *liked* the name “USA”. They thought about changing it to the obvious “Columbia”, but that didn’t really work because “Colombia” already existed in South America. So that was a no-go. Then they tried “Fredonia”. As a claim of “freedom”! But it also sounded kinda weird, and no one could really decide. Inevitably, the “American” Civil War happened, and the name “United States of America” suddenly held much more substantial meaning. It’s kind of cheesy but eh whatever. If we really wanna be accurate: The USA needs to be called “British America” Canada needs to be called “French America” Mexico needs to be called “Spanish America” And everything else needs to be called “French-British-Spanish-Portuguese-Japanese-Chinese America”

But in america (the continent) we can’t really say we are Americans, bc it sounds as if we were saying we were from the US. In Spanish we can say it, but it still sounds off.

    • You can & you should. You ARE American. Frankly as someone from the U.S., I’m tired of people calling our country America. We’re ALL Americans. I get the confusion part but the fact is that you ARE American & if you want to refer to yourself as American then you should. Actually, in the U.S., we usually say South American or Central American. With regard to Mexico, it’s usually Mexican but E.U. American would also work. From now on, I’m going to make sure I either put U.S. in front of American or say North American because that’s more correct than referring to myself as simply American. You should never feel like you can’t refer to yourself as American, that’s not OK, if you live in the Americas then you are American, end of discussion.

    John BEEJohn BEE9 dögum síðan
    • @Silva We aren't 'claiming' America- this whole argument is in bad faith, and always has been; nobody gets mad at the "European Union" for daring to call itself European when there are many countries geographically in Europe that are not a part of it such as Serbia, Norway, and Ukraine. Is it fair for Norwegians to complain to the EU, saying they are "appropriating" the name of their continent? No! The European Union is a union of European states. Just as the USA is a union of Americans states. Sure, we are not all of the Americas-only part of it, but we are in America and we are a union of Americans. Just because we call ourselves the USA, that does not make you Brazilians any less American in the sense of being from the American continent than the EU calling themselves European robs Belarusians and Serbs of their European-ness. Seriously, this is a total non-issue. If it were any country other than the US, nobody would ever bring this up.

      PseudonymPseudonym5 dögum síðan
    • PREACH IT!! I'm brazilian and I agree with everything you said lol They simply appropriated the name of an entire continent... By the way the famous US architect Frank Lloyd Wright coined the term "USONIA" to refer to his vision of the landscape of the United States, including architecture and urbanism. He proposed the use of the USONIAN adjective in place of American to distinguish and dissociate the particular characteristics of American landscapes... They could get inspired by the Wright and call themselves USonions lol
