Artist Daniel Dorall redesigned his 50m2 heritage small apartment in Melbourne's southeast to better utilize the limited space. High ceilings allowed him to purpose build a study area into the bedroom, that functions both as work space and as additional storage. Collections of books and artworks are deliberately grouped in compositions lending to the home's sense of visual balance. While throughout the apartment modernist concrete pieces and hacked Ikea furniture create the opportunity for recessed storage, and the inclusion of a small fireplace, allowing for a continuity that previously did not exist.

  • ”Never too small” is true... since that is a quite big apartment😂😂 ”50m2” and ”small” doesn’t really fit in the same sentence.. I lived in an apartment smaller than 30m2 and with 199-200cm roof height... and i am 195cm tall. That apartment felt a little cramped... mostly cause of the roof height... otherwise it was not that small even though it was badly planned.. My current apartment is 39m2 and that is very big... i have a lot of furniture but still plenty of space. To be honest... the 50m2 apartment in this video feels almost as cramped as my old 30m2 apartment... arrange the furniture differently and you will actually get an 50m2 apartment that doesn’t feel like 25m2 😂😂😂

  • why do they never mention where they store their ladders to reach the super high storage? my last apartment had ridiculous high kitchen cabinets and I never did find a good spot to keep my step stool. it floated around the whole kitchen. sometimes it became a tiny chair.

  • 538 sq ft is not small at all. I reckon this series should focus on units that are less than 400 sq ft.

  • I'm not a fan of open kitchens, and the working space next to the bed seems too small, but apart from this I love it. Finally a place with art! Beautiful!

  • Love the hidden appliances under framed artwork, the soft tone palette contrasting the colourful art and the grouping of objects. Wonder though how you can use the washing machine properly because of its height level... Just remembered that I have seen Dorall's miniature labyrinths in my hometown some years back. Awesome crafty pieces of political commentary! There is a video on ISworlds you can look them up.

  • Not such a "transformation" like usual. A bit disapointing. 🤷‍♀️ Seems more like a decorating job wt. concrete (by the way: good luck ever moving wt. that🤣) buing cupboards & replacing 1 door. Like you could do "so much: wrong wt. that apartment" & like it was "so" ugly before. 🙄🙄 Maybe thats jealousy speaking but couldn't everybody wt. enough money, to buy or rent this place could achieve sth. simular. 🤷‍♀️ But compliments for the cool painting collection & good hanging though. 🙋🏻‍♀️. :) Looks real nice! :)

  • I love this apartment! The large windows and the light that comes through it is just incredible. Want to have this kind of home also here where I live. I was just a little suprised as he talked about the high ceilings in the bedroom, that he hasn´t lifted the bed on some sort of plattform to get additional space. The addition of a door to the bathroom was really clever if guests come over to not go through the bedroom.

  • This apartment is fantastic. I'm a civil engineer and I love concrete as an architectural material. The finish of this concrete is fantastic. The concrete bench is exceptional, I would have casted it altogether in order to avoid the lines at the connection point. Lovely details, like the wooden casing around the intercom make it superb. High ceilings and brightness is a very imprtant thing for me, this house has everything I like. Well done to the man, he created something stunning.
